We have encountered quite a few little creatures in the last week. The tadpoles we found in a fountain at a local park. I scooped a few up in an empty Starbucks cup thinking It would be so fun for Lilly to watch them grow. Now they are sitting in my kitchen (in the same cup) and I'm thinking WTH was I thinking?! Get these gross things out of my house! But I can't simply discard them because I'm a sucker so they will continue to sit there even though Lilly has lost interest until I remember to bring them to a lake so I can
feed them to the fish set them free.
A few days later we were leaving another park when we happened upon a single duckling alone in the grass. He looked a little traumatized and I'm a sucker so I scooped him up in hopes of finding his family. Well, we didn't find his family and I spent about an hour standing in the heat with a two year old and a newborn calling several wildlife sanctuaries and animal services to see if there was anywhere I could take him. One place finally said yes but they were about an hour and a half away (not that big of a sucker). It turns out the little rest he had in my sweater livened him up though because when I put him back on the ground close to the pond he ran super fast and jumped right in. In all honesty, I wanted to bring him home. (See? Sucker.) But I don't know anything about ducklings and the idea of bringing a needy wild baby bird into my home with a newborn felt unwise. So we waved goodbye and headed home. And I have almost gone back every day this week to try to find him and bring him home. Sucker for life.
