Ducklings and tadpoles and babies, oh my!

We have encountered quite a few little creatures in the last week. The tadpoles we found in a fountain at a local park. I scooped a few up in an empty Starbucks cup thinking It would be so fun for Lilly to watch them grow. Now they are sitting in my kitchen (in the same cup) and I'm thinking WTH was I thinking?! Get these gross things out of my house! But I can't simply discard them because I'm a sucker so they will continue to sit there even though Lilly has lost interest until I remember to bring them to a lake so I can feed them to the fish set them free.
A few days later we were leaving another park when we happened upon a single duckling alone in the grass. He looked a little traumatized and I'm a sucker so I scooped him up in hopes of finding his family. Well, we didn't find his family and I spent about an hour standing in the heat with a two year old and a newborn calling several wildlife sanctuaries and animal services to see if there was anywhere I could take him. One place finally said yes but they were about an hour and a half away (not that big of a sucker). It turns out the little rest he had in my sweater livened him up though because when I put him back on the ground close to the pond he ran super fast and jumped right in. In all honesty, I wanted to bring him home. (See? Sucker.) But I don't know anything about ducklings and the idea of bringing a needy wild baby bird into my home with a newborn felt unwise. So we waved goodbye and headed home. And I have almost gone back every day this week to try to find him and bring him home. Sucker for life.

  1. We live close to a creek and in high school - a little waddler walked up to my neighbors (who just happened to be my bestie). We kept him in a big cage type thing like a pet but we let him swim in a pool until he got bigger and released him. It was seriously the coolest thing. we had a pet duck.

  2. Ha this is so me. I can remember being a young girl and picking up a squirrel that fallen out of a tree and wrapping it up taking it inside and putting neosporin and band-aids on it! To this day I want to save all animals and even bring them home with me if I think they are in distress. My husband is the same way and my son seems to have caught our love for animals. It may be a very long road as we continue to go to parks etc. I can just see us collecting a zoo full!
